At muster-in he was described as age 37 years, born in Clay County, Kentucky, and employed as a Laborer. During May 1862 he was on Detached Service guarding freight in the desert. During June 1863 he was on Detached Service on escort duty. Private Collins was discharged at Mesilla, New Mexico Territory, November 30, 1864, due to the expiration of his term of service.

At muster-in he was described as age 40 years 2 months and born in Kentucky. Private Collins was discharged at Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, September 17, 1866.
