Amanda Jane Cook was born 18 February 1850, Rush Co., Indiana. Her parents were Giles and Rebecca (Goble) Cook. She lived with her parents until age 16 when she eloped with her boyfriend Richard Duffey. On October 12, 1866 they ventured, out of state, to Illinois, just beyond Terre Haute, Indiana, where they were married but never obtain legal documentation. They raised at least 3 boys, William, Harvey and Charles Duffey. 4 months before Richard's death, they were remarried on 21 May 1907 in Muncie, Indiana. After Richard passed she applied for a widow's pension, based upon his Civil War service records. After filing several affidavits about her marriage status she was eventually awarded an initial pension of $8.00 per month. Over the years this increased to $75 per month.
