David Rodgers was born in Liff, Forfarshire, Dundee, Scotland. He was the son of John Rodgers (b. 1771) and Elizabeth Bissett, both of whom spent their lives in Liff. David's known siblings included:

*Catherine (married George Berry)
*Elizabeth "Betty" (sometimes referred to as "Mrs. Small," but never married)
*Agnes (married Thomas Anderson)
*James (married Sarah Bell)
*Robert

Some sources say that David immigrated to Buckstown, Pennsylvania around 1819, when he was a teenager, in order to avoid becoming a soldier. Others claim that he came in 1836, bringing along his nephew, William Small. The most likely possibility is that David went first, and William joined him later. Either way, David became a farmer in Shade Township, after first working at a furnace, chopping wood.

David's first wife was Susan Wolford, who was the daughter of Conrad or Michael Wolford. They had at least thirteen children together, including:

*Catherine (married Jacob Leighton)
*James (married Elizabeth McGregor)
*Elizabeth (married Jonathan Cable)
*David L. (married Mary Metzler)
*Franklin (married Mary Jane Lohr, Lydia M. Horner)
*Elmore (married Fannie)

Franklin Rodgers served in the Civil War, fighting in the battle of Fredericksburg, and also became Supervisor of Elections in Somerset County. He was a farmer like his father.

After Susan Wolford's death in 1865, David married Susan Specht Cable, who had outlived her previous husband, Henry Cable. She had eleven children by Mr. Cable, but it is unknown if she and David ever had any together.
