He began his career, like his father, teaching Greek and Latin, but he became Professor of English and later the Head of the English Department from 1896 to 1942 at Montana State College (now University) in Bozeman, Montana.
He married Mabel Gertrude Booth on 22 June 1897 in Anamosa, Iowa. They had twins, William and Wilma Brewer, who died at birth on 7 May 1899. Their other two children were daughters, Gertrude Delavan Brewer and Helen Adele Brewer.
During World War I, he was the Director of Education at Camp Lewis (now Fort Lewis) in Tacoma, Washington. He was responsible for setting up educational classes sponsored by the YMCA for the restless soldiers waiting to go overseas. He and his wife moved to Lodi, California in 1948.
In his later years he became legally blind, but he took his white cane and got on the bus and found his way around neighboring towns and cities to serve on committees for his church and for the blind.
