Helen Richards Brewer graduated from Grinnell College, Class of 1885. She also studied at Colorado College, University of Nebraska, and the University of Chicago. In 1910 she was elected a member of the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa, at Grinnell College, and in 1925, Grinnell awarded her the M.A. Degree, honoris causa.

She was a Professor of History and Head of the History Department at Montana State College (now University), Bozeman, Montana, from 1898 to 1932. She was very active in the general and social life of the College, with both faculty and students. As head of the History Department, she was one of the few women who held such a position in academia at the turn of the century, thus helping to provide new opportunities for other women.

She was a member of the Mt. Hyalite Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Bozeman, Montana, and was Regent of that chapter 1927-1928. She also served as State Historian for the Montana DAR in 1913.
