Powhattan community and all of Brown County were saddened by the death of Mr. Abijah H. Bartley, 89. He passed away Saturday evening at the Horton hospital. Though he had been in declining health for several years, his last illness was but of a few days. "Bijah" Bartly was a life-long resident of the Powhattan community. He farm north of Powhattan. He was a member of the Powhattan Methodist Church all of his life and was Sunday school superintendent for over 50 years. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, was recognized in these community as honorable, dependable and worthy of respect. He is survived by his wife, Lottie, his companion for over 65 years, four daughters Mrs. J. P.(Ethel)Freeland of Horton, Mrs. Paul (Columbia) LaCroix, of Hiawatha, Mrs. D. A.(Mabel) Zimmerman of Powhattan, and Mrs. B. I.(Dorothy) Smith of Sallisaw Oklahoma, three sons, Glenn Bartley of Powhattan, Ralph and Harold Bartley of Topeka, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, June 25 at 230 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Powhattan with the pastor, the Rev. John W. Campbell, officiating. Interment was in the Powhattan cemetery.
