John Grayson, 70, was leader of state, local bar associations
Memorial services for John A. Grayson, 70, Indianapolis, a retired attorney and a leader in local and state bar associations, will be at 7 p.m. March 21 in First Congregational Church.
Calling will follow at Olde Mill Condominium Clubhouse, 165 W. 86th St. Burial will be private.
Mr. Grayson died March 17.
He was a partner 30 years with the Ice Miller law firm, retiring in 1996. He joined the firm in 1955, when it was known as Ross McCord Ice & Miller, and became a partner in 1966. The firm's name was changed in 1965 to Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan and recently to Ice Miller.
Mr. Grayson was a specialist in real estate law and wrote numerous articles on the subject. He also taught real estate law at the Indiana University School of Business in Indianapolis.
He served on the board of managers of the Indianapolis and Indiana State Bar associations and was president of the state association in 1989-90. He also was on the board of governors of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.
Active in several human service and arts agencies, he was president of Crossroads Rehabilitation Center and chairman of the board of Bosma Industries for the Blind Inc.
In 1999, he received the Thomas C. Hasbrook Award from Bosma Industries for outstanding achievements in assisting the visually impaired and blind community.
He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1990.
Mr. Grayson also was president of the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis in 1993-94 and a member of the boards of directors of Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Indiana Repertory Theatre and Indianapolis Arts Chorale.
He was a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Michigan Law School.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, of which he was a member and former member of the board of trustees, or to the Eiteljorg Museum.
He was the widower of Barbara Merrill Grayson.
Survivors: children, brother, sister, five grandchildren.
He was cremated and inurned at Moss Cemetery, Ashboro, Indiana
