Margaret Scott Chestnut-Harp was born on August 2, 1900 in Galloway, Polk County, Florida. She was the eighth of nine children born to William Hiram and Minnie Etta Hillyer-Chestnut. She graduated in 1920 from Kathleen High School and received her teaching certificate in 1920 and began her 24 year teaching career at Griffin Elementary School. She attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland and graduated in 1941. She became the Principal of the Winston School, commonly referred to as "The Strawberry School", since students were excused when it was time to harvest strawberries.

On June 10th, 1922, Margaret Chestnut married Wilburn "Bud" Harp, an Orange Grower from Polk County, Florida, and they settled in Socrum. They had two children, Wilburn Dayton (1923) and Patsy Ruth (1930) Harp.

On December 13, 1951, Margaret Harp was fatally injured in an automobile accident on her way to work and died of her injuries on December 23, 1951 in Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando.

She was a charter member of the New Home Baptist Church and member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Socrum, where she is buried beside her husband.
