Peter Rothrock was the fourth of ten known children of Johann Georg (went by George) Rothrock (1721-1806) and Elizabeth Roemig Rothrock (c1721-c1798-1803), who married c1746 in Pennsylvania. Both George and Elizabeth died at Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

Peter was raised in Pennsylvania and served with the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary war. After the War he married Margaret Hübner/Heavener/Heidner (1755-1842) on 13 Jan 1785 in Pennsylvania. Peter and Margaret were the parents of three known children, namely:

1. Solomon Rothrock (1786-1867)
2. Henryi Peter Rothrock (1792-1871)
3. Mary Rothrock Wilson (1802-1872)

There are possibly other children that died young.

Peter served as a private in Captain Christopher Wignor's 6th County, Second Battalion, Bucks County Militia during the American Revolution. In 1790 the family was living at Springfield Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1793 the family moved from Bucks County, Pennsylvania some 200 miles north to Oneida County, New York. In the 1800 census PETER is listed in Camden Township, Oneida County, New York. In the summer or fall of 1818 the entire family (parents, children and grandchildren; along with a nephew Henry Rothrock; probably the son of Peter's older brother Henry) traveled overland and by boat on the Ohio River, arriving in Late 1818 at the Falls (rapids) at Jeffersonville, Indiana; across the river from Louisville, Kentucky. Early in 1819 the family floated their boat over the falls on the spring floods and went some 60 to 70 miles downstream to the mouth of the Blue River in Crawford County, Indiana and inland a few miles where they settled, built a house and mill, and began a new life.
