He was born June 20, 1936 in Pender County to the late Johnny J. ?J. J.? and Mildred George Abbott. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tommy and Bobby Abbott and nephew, Kenneth Gurgainous.
Surviving are his sisters, Louise (Otis) Gurgainous of Rose Hill and Shirley (Woody) Wilson of Southport; brother, Lawrence (Linda) Abbott of Wilmington and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a dedicated employee at Johnnie Mercer's Pier for thirty years and will be remembered at the Star Way Flea Market where he was a colorful regular for many years.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ray Mendenhall officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service on Wednesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home.
