Clark A. Bitner, aged 77, a florist in Fort Wayne for 22 years, died at 8:45 o’clock today at his residence, 226 Lexington Court. Mr. Bitner was one of the oldest members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in the city, having become a member on September 2, 1876.
Mr. Bitner was employed for 27 years as a molder in the brass foundry of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He went to work as a helper there in 1872 and in three months was given a bench as a molder. He made all the bells used on the Pennsylvania Railroad between Chicago and Pittsburgh. He served as assistant foreman for a period of 15 years. When the brass foundry was moved to Alleghany, Pa., he took up the florist business and maintained greenhouses here for a period of 22 years. He retired from business in 1920.
He was born at Roanoke, October 24, 1853, the son of Andrew J. and Eliza M. Bitner. In 1863, his parents moved to Crawford County, O., but in 1864 moved back to Indiana, living on the Bluffton Plank Road on the Allen and Wells County Line until May 1, 1866.
Mr. Bitner was married to Miss Sadie Smitley, of Middletown, O., October 27, 1878. Two children, a son and a daughter were born but both died in infancy. His wife died in 1920 after an illness of four years.
In 1921, he was married to Mrs. Maggie L. Bair, who survives. He is also survived by a stepson, C. J. Bair of Mishawaka and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Helen Lockhart of South Bend and four grandchildren. Mrs. W. T. Jeffries of Fort Wayne is a sister.
Mr. Bitner was also a member of the Queen Esther Lodge 324, Daughters of Rebekah. He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church.
