Orangeburg - The Rev. Paul A. Bolen, 81, retired Baptist minister of the Bolen community, died Thursday night at the Orangeburg Regional Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. W. W. Lancaster officiating, assisted by Dr. S. H. Jones, editor of the Baptist Courier. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Bolen was born in the Bolen community, a son of the late Rev. George E. and Martha Fogle Bolen and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Bolen attended the Orangeburg Collegiate Institute and was graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1908. He pastored churches in the Barnwell, Charleston and Orangeburg Baptist Association. He retired in 1946 after serving pastorates at St. George, Bethany, Cope and Two Mile Swamp Baptist Churches. He was pastor at St. George Baptist Church for 37 years and Bethany Baptist Church, his old home church, for 28 years. He did supply work for 13 years until his health failed three years ago. He served as trustee of the Baptist Courier from 1927 to 1950. He served as moderator of the Orangeburg Baptist Association for six years and was a member of the South Carolina Baptist Board for 10 years. He also served as general representative of the Southern Seminary in Barnwell and Orangeburg Associations. He led in the building of five churches and in the remodeling of three others. He had attended 36 consecutive meetings of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was written up in Religious Leaders of America and Who's Who in The Clergy of America as a civic leader. This minister was nationally recognized in 1918 for his work serving as chairman of the United War Work campaign in Liberty Township where he headed a committee that led the entire United States in township quotas. He lived in retirement with the people he had served during his ministerial life. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lillian Lancaster Bolen; one daughter, Mrs. Richard K. Truluck of Olanta; one grandson, Richard K. Truluck Jr. of Olanta; one sister, Mrs. H. F. Rutland of Neeses; one brother, Bailey B.
