Doris was born March 1, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1945, she received her degree of nursing from King's County Hospital in New York and became a Navy wife to her one true love, Samuel King Atkinson until his death in 1981.
She raised six children who will miss her dearly, Jannette Edwards of Hampton, Margaret Anderson of Delmar, Del., Susan Tweed, Samuel Atkinson IV and Paul Atkinson of Norfolk and Rosemary Atkinson of Winter Haven, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral officiated by the Rev. David Gardner will be held Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Ave., Norfolk. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
