Wrote down this baby's birth.
Then whispered as she closed the Book,
"Too beautiful for earth."
Little Mary was the youngest child of Joseph and Adele Spencer Runte.
Mary's death was, in part, the result of a tragic error by her mother's physician. Adele, having had numerous pregnancies, knew that she could feel the movement of her unborn infant but her physician insisted that she had a uterine growth that mimicked the symptoms of pregnancy. She did have the uterine growth and it was positioned over the baby, making it more difficult to hear or detect the developing fetus. Surgery was performed excising the tumor but injuring the baby. Mary was born prematurely but managed to live for a short time before her under developed lungs failed her. Her death certificate was filed with an incorrect surname spelling and failed to mention that her premature birth was performed by "c-section". The unfortunate circumstances of Mary's premature birth and death were deeply etched in the hearts and memories of those who loved her.
Always a silent hurt,
many a silent tear,
but always a beautiful memory
of one we loved so dear.
God gave us strength to bear it,
and courage to take the blow,
but what it meant to lose you
...no one will ever know.
