Esther A. Piña, 85, of Salinas, was called home to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
She was born May 16, 1925, in Denver, Colo. to Andrew and Maria Araujo. As an infant, her father passed away. Her mother then moved the family to California, settling in Corona.
She lived in Corona when she met a young man by the name of Arthur R. Piña. They were married on July 25, 1943. Later that year, they moved to the Monterey Peninsula. This was during the war, and Mrs. Piña worked for the canneries on Cannery Row in Monterey. She also worked for the Monterey Recreation Department teaching sports to young people. She taught both boys and girls how to play baseball, football, and many other sports. She was quite an athletic woman for her day. She was very motivated, and kept the family very busy. She was also quite a talented cook and had creativity in all she touched. She was famous for her enchiladas. She would make hundreds every week for peninsula restaurants, delis, and schools. They lived in Pacific Grove and Seaside for the next 16 years before moving to Salinas in 1959. There they built a home in South Salinas on Rio Verde Drive. In 1964, they moved the family to a new house on Pajaro Street, which is still the family home today. In Salinas, Mrs. Piña started making wedding cakes, and arranging flowers for weddings out of the family home, while Mr. Piña would print all the napkins and wedding favor cards. In 1967, Esther and Arthur opened Piña's Wedding World. This was a downtown icon in South Salinas for many years. They retired in 1979. Mrs. Piña continued on as a private wedding consultant for the next several years. She was a beautiful person, inside and out.
Mrs. Piña was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salinas. She loved her Lord and brought her children up to do the same. She was a prayer warrior for her family, and to whoever was in need. She was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother (Lita), great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Her family is left with the sadness of her departure. They are comforted by the peace that she is no longer suffering, and that she is now standing in Heaven with her son, Ronnie.
Mrs. Piña was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie, in 2001; three sisters, and two brothers.
Survivors: She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Arthur R. Piña, and three children, Arthur R. (Carla) Piña Jr. of Hesperia, Priscilla M. (Kim) Lee of Salinas, and Andrew M. (Gayl) Piña of Salinas; brother, Paul Araujo of Corona; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services: 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, at Struve and Laporte Chapel. 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.
