TOWNSEND -- Toivo J. Tommila, 92, died peacefully at his home on April 28, 2007, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Pauline A. (Breau) Tommila, who died in 2003; his sisters Ellen Parnanen of Fitchburg, Mass., Elvie Julian of Buena Park, Calif., and a grandson, Rafael Mills Weeks of Rindge, N.H.

Mr. Tommila is survived by a son, Peter J. Tommila of Greenwood, Maine; two daughters, Tonja A. Evans of East Baldwin, Maine, and Marsha L. Mills of Rindge, N.H. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilho Tommila of Rockville, Md.; and a sister, Helen Boyd of Buena Park, Calif.

Mr. Tommila was born in Fitchburg on June 7, 1914, a son of Isak and Alma (Jarvenpaa) Tommila and had resided in Townsend for the past 55 years.

For 45 years he worked as an electrician at the Fitchburg Paper Company. During WW II he served his country in the United States Navy.

He was a member of the Miller-Terrill American Legion Post and was instrumental in the formation and operation of the Townsend Horseshoe League for 50 years. He also owned, trained, and raced his horses for harness racing from 1960-1985. He was an avid hunter, bowler and golfer. Toivo attended the Christian Outreach Church in Rindge, N.H.

At his request, his service will be private and at the convenience of the family.
