Son of Richard Tanner Archer and Mary Chastain Cocke. He was born at "The Lodge" in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Ann Maria Barnes, by whom he had 16 children, 9 of whom lived to maturity. A physician, he moved to the area of Port Gibson, Mississippi, and built a home, "Anchuca" in Claiborne County, to which his widowed mother came to live also. The Virginia Historical Society has a daguerreotype of "Anchuca" a well as his medical chest and contents.
