The late Dr. A. D.Wood, was born in Scipio, N.Y., in 1809 and departed this life in the city of his adoption in 1862. He was one of the early pioneers of Wapello County, and one of the first representatives of his profession to locate here. During a long residence here, his professional skill and excellent personal character secured for him a large circle of friends, whose confidence and esteem he enjoyed to a marked degree. Dr. Wood was reared to manhood in his native town and entered upon the study of medicine at Auburn, N.Y., under the instruction of Dr. Morgan, a prominent physician of that city who, for many years, had charge of the medical department of the State Penitentiary. After the completion of his course Dr. Wood entered Fairfield Medical College near Utica, N.Y., and graduated in the class of 1830. He had been a close student, was thoroughly interested in the intricracies of his profession, and ambitious to excel. The year followinghis graduation, Dr. Wood was united in marriage Miss Eliza Ann, the daughter of Jabez Pease, who served in the War of 1812. His father served as a soldier of the Revolution and was a favorable aide on the staff of General Washington.
Mrs Wood was born in Seneca County, N.Y. in 1812. In 1850 they moved to Iowa and located in Ottumwa. Of the union of Dr. and Mrs. Wood were born eight children, as follows; George D., a resident of Waco, Texas, and an alderman of that city; Mary, who became the wife Kinsey Jordan of Ottumwa and died in 1872; Helen I, wife of E.R.Oliver, a Jeweler of Ottumwa; Charles L., lives in Pensacolla, Florida; Clara A., married James L. Serviss, a railway conductor; Julia F., wife of K. Jordan of Ottumwa; Robert P., lives in Montana; one child died in infancy.
