James Cravey was born Mar. 8, 1872, to Charles Henry Cravey (b. 1825, GA.) and Mary Eleanor Holland (b. 1835, MS), in Anhalt, Comal County, Texas. He stood 5 feet 8 inches tall, had blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. James was married to Mary Belle Stevens (b. 1881, TX). They had five children. He had been a farmer in Kerr County and Bandera County, Texas. James was a watchman on the I&GN railroad. He enlisted in the Texas Rangers as a Special Ranger May 17, 1918--June 10, 1918. He was killed June 10, 1918, in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. He is buried in Bandera Cemetery, Bandera, Texas. James had a brother, Ranger Fletcher Cravey, who was also a Texas Ranger. Records do not state how James Cravey was killed. According to Donna Schulte Loth, a Find A Grave contributor, James was supposedly killed in Williamsons Co. TX by a thief stealing cotton seed hull from an I. & G. N. railway car. Mr. W. E Parsons, an engineer, was arrested and charged with murder. Mr. W.E. Parsons is alleged to have stabbed James Cravey when James attempted to arrest him for the theft of the cotton seed hull. James had also served as a Deputy Sheriff and Tax Collector in Williamson Co. TX for eight years prior to his death.
