1.) DIED. Elder Winter Hastings was born in Yorkshire, England, November 12, 1831, and he grew up to manhood in his native land.

He married and sons and daughters were born to him. The year when he came to America is not known, neither the date of his wife's death. Two sons were living the last he knew about them, their residence being unknown to him. A daughter lives at Custer, Whatcom County, Washington.

Elder Hastings resided a long time at Gilman, and later at Seattle. He obeyed the gospel at Gilman, being baptized by Elder John Davis in 1891. Also he was ordained to the ministry in 1893, by Elder Daley, and labored for the church at Gilman and Seattle before he came east.

Since March 1907, he has been cared for in one of the church homes in Lamoni. He was mild in his manner, those who knew him were his friends.

He was 84 years and 8 days old. By his request, his funeral sermon was preached by H. A. Stebbins, assisted by D. D. Young.

2.) Winter and his family sailed into New York Harbor May 1, 1860 on the ship UNDERWRITER with their fellow Mormon converts. The plan was to create God's kingdom on earth in Salt Lake City, Utah. They made their way to the outfitting post of Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha) and were assigned to the JAMES DARLING ROSS COMPANY. This group of 249 individuals and 36 wagons departed June 14, 1860 and arrived in Salt Lake City on September 3, 1860. Their enormous sacrifices equaled their determination and faithfulness.

Although young George Hastings died in Utah, the family found they disagreed with the teachings of the church and created new lives for themselves in Illinois, California, Washington, and Iowa. Winter never released the dream of living among a community of kingdom-builders. He eventually joined the Reorganized Latter Day Saints church and moved to Lamoni to be among its people.
