Robert Price "Bob" Sanders was born to Scott S. Sanders (deceased in 1910) and Sally Dee (Johnson) Sanders near Frederick, Oklahoma on April 11, 1920. Bob was the younger of two boys, Harold and Robert. This family was engaged in farming. Scott died of typhoid fever when Robert was three months old. Sally and the two boys moved to Seagoville, Texas to the home of her mother. Some years later after a remarriage they moved to Bailey County.
Katherine Hanover was born to Henry and Rose (Powell) Hanover at Oglesby, Texas on February 11, 1913. This family was engaged in the lumber business at Oglesby. Years later at the onset of the Great Depression of the twenties and thirties, after losing out to poor farm prices and other reversals the family moved to Bailey County, Goodland, Texas.
Bob Sanders and Katherine Hanover were married on Sunday, June 4, 1933 at the home of the bride's parents. The ranch house at Goodland was crowded with well wishers and close friends. The wedding trip consisted of a journey of about six miles to the Maple Wilson Community where a new boxcar shack awaited the couple as their new home. On the way a side trip was made by the couple to the Goodland store where the pair purchased groceries for the oncoming week. A new broom was given the couple by the store owners, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Beaty.
Katherine taught school in the Maple Wilson School for seven years. Robert worked at farming,, trucking, school bus driving, selling Texaco Gasoline, and ran the Co-Op Gin for a year or two. During that time the couple joined in many community activities and projects such as sponsoring trips for the larger school kids to places such as Carlsbad Caverns, the yearly South Plains Fair at Lubbock, Texas and organizing baseball teams for the young men.
In 1939 we began our family: We had three children. Robert Lynn Sanders was born December 30, 1939. Jane Ellen Sanders was born June 23, 1943. Mary Elizabeth Sanders was born July 9, 1944.
The children all attended the Three Way School, which was formed from Maple Wilson, Watson,, and Goodland Schools. Later the Stegall School was included in the group.
In 1952 the family moved into Muleshoe and I continued teaching many more years. I am a member of the First Baptist Church, many professional organizations, Order of the Eastern Star, and have worked with Girl Scouts, Parent-Teacher Groups and Meals on Wheels.
Bob Sanders was a member of the First Baptist Church, Morton Masonic Lodge, Scottish-Rite-32nd Degree Mason, Lions Club, Muleshoe Youth Activity Club and an honorary member of the Jennyslippers. He was also county commissioner and representative from Bailey County to the South Plains Assn. of Governments.
The children all finished Muleshoe High School and went on to higher education. Bob finished at Texas Tech, so did Mary. Jane finished at East Texas University. We have many happy memories of our family life and our children have grown up to be fine responsible people and have made us proud of them all.
I close with the little remark that Bob always gave over the two-way communication system as he would leave town each morning on the way out to his duties. He would call: "This is 'OO' Ten-Seventy-Six, off to the Land of Milk and Honey."
He truly loved that south county country.
