Henry Hanover was born to W. S. and Elizabeth (Love) Hanover near Wheelock, Texas. Henry was born April 2, 1878. He was the second child of a family of twelve children. The family was engaged in a type of plantation farming on Cedar Creek in Robertson County, Texas. There was an old-fashioned commissary on the farm where the field hands could purchase supplies.

Sarah Rose Powell was born at Crawford, Texas on March 1, 1889 to S. E. and Amanda (Criswell) Powell. Rose was the youngest of a family of seven children. This family was engaged in farming and mercantile trading.

Henry and Rose were married at Oglesby, Texas on January 10, 1910. To this union three daughters were born: Amy Elizabeth, born November 25, 1910; Katherine born February 11, 1913; and Rosemary Eula born February 14, 1916. The family lived at various places in central Texas, being engaged in farming, business management and small ranching.

At the onset of the great depression after the WWI conflict, the Hanover assets were gradually consumed in debt. Two black land farms were repossessed and finding another avenue of employment was of great necessity.

Henry was offered a job in Bailey County, Texas as manager of the expanive "Figure-Four" ranch at Goodland, Texas. It was not a matter of choice that the family arrived at Littlefield, Texas by train as the result of a sixteen hour trek January, 1928. Henry had preceded the family a few weeks earlier carrying the family household goods on a Model T truck loaded "to the gills." He had at one time, years ago, in his teens, been an "East Texas Cowboy" at the Yellow House Canyon Ranch in the area, so he was acquainted with the terrain and was delighted at our move westward.

So with the introduction of the area from our dad and by viewing the grandeur of the wide open spaces, "on a clear day one could see forever," the gorgeous sunsets, and the wild wind, we were more or less happy to be in a new and different place. Along with all this and the rugged inconveniences, the Hanover family began a long and different life-style of a happy fruitful life.

Amy (Hanover) Bennett, our older sister, and our grandmother Powell came to live with us during the summer of 1928. "Mammaw" lived with us several years until she died. Along in the middle of November a baby girl was born to Amy. Old Dr. Logan from Morton attended her at the ranch house. This baby girl was named Audrey Faye Bennett. Her granddad would not ??? nick-name stayed. Patsy was one of two or three babies born in south Bailey County at this early time. How-be-it it was a good time and place as she grew up to be a joy and pride to us all.

Henry Hanover was a school trustee, a member of the IOOF Lodge, and a deputy sheriff for the south part of the county for many years. Rose was a housewife, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Bailey County Home Demonstration Club. She was a willing community worker. In 1946 Henry and Rose moved into Muleshoe so Patsy could finish her high school work.

Amy married J. E. "Ping" Evetts in June 1938. They moved to Portales, New Mexico.

Katherine married R. P. "Bob" Sanders June 4, 1933. They moved to the Maple Wilson community (Three Way Area).

Rosemary married Baker Brantley Johnson December 25, 1936. They moved two miles north of Goodland to their home.

I remember this part of my life as: exciting, free and exhilarating--being loved, giving love--that's about the best anyone could want of life. It was a wonderful life.
