Malinda E. Drennan

She wandered off today, alone,
Along a path we've never known
I wonder, if perchance, she knows,
Our thoughts are with her as she goes
So far from home. Her parting smile
Was good to see. After awhile,
The hurt will leave and in its place
Will be the memory of her face.

I hope she finds a lazy brook
With fern-fringed edge; a shady nook,
Where she can sit with half closed eyes
And watch the cloud banks in the skies.
I hope she does, for some fine day,
I too am going down that way.

Malinda Elizabeth Curry, the last remaining member of the family of Joseph and Mary Curry, was born near Peoria, Illinois February 9, 1857 and died November 27, 1948.

In the fall of 1869 the Curry family moved to Iowa via the covered wagon and located on a farm in Lincoln Township, 12 miles northwest of Corning. Here Malinda grew to womanhood and on March 10, 1879 was united in marriage to Joseph Drennan, a young farmer of the community. Here they established their home on 160 acres of land purchased of the Railroad Company. And here, also, four daughters were born to them: Myrtle Drennan, Effie Akin, Carrie Bowman, Grace Biggar, all of whom survive except Grace who passed away September 6th. Besides the four daughters, six grandchildren also survive: Joseph Donald Akin of Corning; Eleanor Waugh of Omaha, Nebraska; Dexter Mead of Tacoma, Washington; and Marjorie Miller of Hastings, Nebraska; James and Jan Biggar of Corning; also four great grandchildren, Susan and Ricky Mead, Diana Jo and Joseph Scott Akin.

During her early married life she united with the Methodist Church at Carbon, Iowa, later transferring her membership to the Corning Methodist Church when the family moved from the farm to make their home in Corning in 1893.

In 1901 they built the present home where she has since lived to enjoy the comforts of life and the progress made through civilization - a distinct contrast to her earlier years when the country was yet new and undeveloped, and she shared the life of the pioneers, much of which was a hard struggle, fighting snows, the drouths, the hot winds, the prairie fires, the blizzards, fighting to make a home on a raw prairie, and fighting for the children's physical, mental, and spiritual development. She yielded herself to the toil, giving her all in service and continuing through her life. She has been the type that could be used in a book or painted in a picture as one of the sturdy stock of the ages who has always done the carrying-on when the going was difficulty.

Her husband preceded her in death November 7, 1935 after sharing with her 56 years of the vicissitudes of life. During the 79 years she has lived in Adams County, she has gathered about her a large circle of friends through her cordial hospitality and generous nature. Many of these friends have long since gone to their reward, but those who remain mourn with the family her passing and find it difficult to realize that more than 91 years of living have been brought to a close.

Funeral services were fro the Corning Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, November 30, at 2:30 o'clock. Services were in charge of Rev. T. B. Turner, assisted by Rev. R. T. White. Interment was in Walnut Grove cemetery.

Pall bearers were Donald Wilmarth, Joe Curry, Cleve Curry, Charles Dunn, Ralph Lynam, and Beryl Roberts. Music was in charge of Mrs. Joe Cook.

Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miller of Hastings, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Waugh of Omaha, Nebraska; Joe Curry, Mrs. Edith Nelson and Mrs. Lucille Brewer all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. George Drennan of New Sharon, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Elrod Curry of Massena, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Fletter of Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Allan and Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Akin, all of Ames, Iowa; Mrs. and Mrs. C. M. Loomis, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Dunn of Chariton, Iowa.
