Marca Etta Kelsey, who called herself
Maud, was born on 23 December 1893 at
Overton, Clark, Nevada, to Calvin Kelsey
and Annie Elizabeth Elder. She stated
that her father was an alcoholic, migrant
farm worker. She loved her father, and
contended that he was the best father one
could ask for when he wasn't drunk. He
baked bread, cooked for his children, and
generally looked after their welfare when
he was sober. Maud's mother was chariety
oriented, and spent much of her time caring
for sick neighbors, etc. Maud was closer to
her father.

When she was only ten years old, she
hired out to work as a housemaid for other
people as the family moved from town to
town. She received board and room and
some clothing as pay, and her employers
were not always as kind as they might have
been. She attended school until she completed
the third grade.

She was living in Hinckley, Utah when she got
a job in Leamington working for Parley Elder,
her uncle. Parley Elder had married Oxel's
closest sister, Annie Elizabeth Johnson, and
that is how Oxel and Maud first became
acquainted.
