William was born in Scotland to William Dunsmore and Janet McCulloch. He had eight siblings: un-named brother, John, Jennett, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Jane, and Thomas McCullough. William emmigrated to Canada with his family between 1829 and 1831. They settled in Oro, Simcoe, Ontario. William married Mary Ann Jermey in 1857. They had ten children: William Henry, Samuel John, Elizabeth Jane, Thomas James, Hannah Maria, Charlotte Caroline, Anne Louisa, Mary Ida, and Lillian Maud. William died of typhoid fever. He is buried in Oro, Ontario. His wife died 11 days after him, also of typhoid fever. Their children were ages 1 month to 18 years.
