John was born to William Dunsmore and Janet McCulloch in Glasgow, Scotland. He had eight siblings: un-named brother, William, Jennett, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Jane, and Thomas McCullogh. John emmigrated from Scotland to Canada between 1829 and 1831. His family settled in Oro, Simcoe, Ontario. John married Keziah Bee Cotton on 19 December 1843 in Crown Hill, Oro, Simcoe, Ontario. They had nine children: William Cotton, Rhoda Cotton, Jennett Cotton, Noah Cotton, John Cotton, Thomas McCullogh, Simeon Cotton, David Cotton, and Kezia Cotton. His wife, Keziah, died between 1861 and 1866. John later married the girl next door, Eliza Strong on 22 November 1866 in Craighurst, Medonte, Simcoe, Ontario. They had six children: Joseph, James Albert, Margaret Elizabeth, Robert Charles, Martha Ann, and Alma Jane. Four of John and Eliza's children and their families(Joseph, James, Robert and Alma) moved out to Montana in the United States. James and his family did not like Montana and moved back to Oro, Ontario. John died in Oro, Ontario and is buried there. John's grave stone states that he died 22 Dec 1886, but his death recored states that he died September 22, 1886.
