Joseph was a son of August and Sarah Gulley. He first married the former Mary R. McGinness, March 23, 1898 in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri. She was a daughter of William L. "Bill" McGinness and the former Ann Jane Matthews of Ireland, also buried in Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Mary McGinness Gulley passed away March 14, 1905 due to a difficult childbirth. The child was William Adger Gulley, also buried at the cemetery. He was born March 13, 1905 and died March 17th of that same year (#90483140). Mary's death was on the 14th.

Joseph remarried Nov. 28, 1906 in Lafayette County, Missouri to Garnett Willis, and they had three children, Theodore (b. 1907 d. 1958), Rudy (b. 1912), and Loren W. Gulley (b. 1915 d. 1967).

After Garnett's death in 1918, Joseph married a third time to Bessie Heiple. They had four children, Henry (b. 1923), Mary E. (b. 1925 d. 1925), Herbert (b. 1927 d. 1962), and Betty Gulley (b. 1928). Thanks to Judy Grubbs for additional information.
