Alma was born in Weakley Co. Tennessee, daughter of Henry Jones and Emily Ann Hoggard. Her father died in 1861. In 1870 she lived in Cane Hill, Washington Co. Arkansas in 1870 with her sister, and mother who seems to be married to John Heath, who it tuns out to be Emily Ann's first cousin.... A marriage record has yet to be found. We know that the Civil War was going strong and the Caldwells were harrased by the Feds at Cane Hill, Arkansas. Three of the Caldwell boys joined the Confederacy. James Caldwell died at the battle of Port Gibson, one of the battles of Vickburg. Henry Thomas was an officer and fougt in many places. Younger brother John H. Caldwell didn't join until 1864. His mom probably tried to hold him back. He was wounded after 20 days serving with Capt. Tuck Smith's Calvary, probably nearby. The Caldwell's left Cane Hill in the late 1860's. We don't know when Alma came to Cane Hill, but we can be pretty sure that it was shortly after the Civil War ended. John's family moved and were in Sebastian Co. Arkansas by 1870. I think the love bug had already struck John and Alma. They somehow found each other and on 12 May 1875, they were married in Salem City, Sebastian Co. Arkansas. That is current day Witcherville, where Alma's mom, Mammy Heath is buried.
