OBITUARY

Marcella Middleton Gaskins Strickland, 91, passed away February 16, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Long County native was born April 2, 1915, the daughter of Charles L. and Cora Ginn Middleton, and weighed 3 lbs. at birth. She was a graduate of Ludowici High School. She was a member of Claxton United Methodist Church for the past 50 years, past president of UMW and a member of the Corinne Adams Group. She was the first female appointed to the Long County Board of Education and a charter member of the Richmond Hill UMC. In 1941 she joined the Martha Washington Chapter 300 and served as secretary for 27 years. She retired from the Evans County Library and believed that the power of prayer was the most important thing in her life. Survivors: one sister, Delorese Middleton Parker of Claxton; one step-daughter, Betty Burt of Tuscan, Arizona; 11 step-grandchildren, 18 step -great grandchildren, 6 step -great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitaiton: Sunday, February 18, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., until, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home. Funeral: Monday, February 19, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at the Claxton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Hutto, Rev. John B. Carroll and Dr. O.H. Smith officiating. Burial: Middleton Memorial Cemetery, with Eastern Star Graveside services. Pallbearers: Will Parker, Abe Parker, Jon Strickland, Tommy Sigman, III, Lane Miller, Tim Miller and James Waters. Honorary pallbearers: Claxton UMW and Martha Washington Chapter 300 members.
