A.G. "Gus" Coffey, 88, of Shelbyville, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Major Hospital.
Born March 26, 1922, in Ono, Ky., he was the son of Richard Gatewood and Mary Etna (Johnson) Coffey. He married Joan Thurston on Sept. 3, 1955, and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2003.
Survivors include his sons, Bill (wife, Loretta) Coffey of Shelbyville and Jamie Coffey of Portland, Ore.; sister, Ruth (husband, Robert) Bayne of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Michelle (husband, Steve) Collings, Nic (wife, Alyson) Coffey and Samantha (husband, James) Evans; and great-grandchildren, Nicole Collings, Ethan Coffey and Hannah Collings.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Coin Coffey, Carthal Coffey, Richard Coffey and Frank Coffey; and sisters, Cecilia Coffey and Eulena Campbell.
Mr. Coffey moved to Shelbyville from Connersville in 1990.
He had been a plant engineer for Ford (Visteon) in Connersville for 30 years, retiring in 1990. For the previous 20 years, he was a plant engineer for Ford Motor Co. in Indianapolis, Wayne Works in Richmond, Diamond Chain in Indianapolis, Avco in Richmond and B&B Welding in Lawrence. He boxed Golden Gloves in Cincinnati and also in the Pacific Theatre.
Mr. Coffey was a Navy veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of parachute rigger first class.
He graduated from Brownstown High School in 1950 and Tri State college in Angola in 1953.
Mr. Coffey was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 70, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Shelbyville Senior Services, Fun Bunch, Thursday Doubles Senior Tennis in Morrison Park and a regular at McDonald's Breakfast Club.
He loved playing tennis and golf, traveling for business and leisure and loved being around family and friends. He enjoyed all church functions, visiting people and bringing gifts and telling stories. He was a loving, generous man, who was always willing to help.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Campbell officiating.
Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery in Shelby County with military rites conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby County Cancer Association, in care of the funeral home.
