Obituary: George H. Altenburg, 88, pioneer sawmill owner at Dancy, former chairman of the town of Bergen, Marathon county, and Civil war veteran, died Tuesday morning at his home, 637 Strongs avenue, Stevens Point. The deceased was born in Cattaraugus county New York, January 27, 1843. The family came to Portage county in November, 1856, and settled on a farm in the town of Plover where they lived until 1862, when they moved to Dancy. Mr. Altenburg served in the infantry corps of Company B, [46th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers] during the last year of the Civil war, being stationed in Alabama. He was married November 11, 1866, to Erminta Whittaker of Portage county, who survives, as do their three sons, Miner H. and Holmes A. Altenburg of Dancy and Charles W. Altenburg of Stevens Point. Mr. Altenburg was one of the early river pilots on the Wisconsin river. He purchased the Danielson-Hutchinson sawmill on the Little Eau Pleine river at Dancy in 1887, which he managed until he retired from active business in 1910. He went to Stevens Point to reside more than thirty years ago. The deceased was a member of the soldiers' relief commission of Portage county for a long time, and resigned this winter because of ill health. He received a letter of commendation praising him for his services from County Judge W. F. Owen. Besides his widow and three sons, Mr. Altenburg is survived by thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Isabelle Stoddard, of Stevens Point, three brothers, Worth and Roscoe Altenburg of the town of Plover and Scott Altenburg of Kibble, Michigan.
