Isaiah Joseph Altenburg, a Civil war veteran and pioneer resident of Portage county, passed away Thursday evening at the home of his son, Robert Altenburg in the town of Plover, with whom he had lived since the death of his wife eight years ago. ... The deceased was born in Poland, New York, April 1841, making him 88 years of age his last birthday. He moved to Portage county from New York state with his parents in 1856. He was a son of the late John Altenburg, Sr., and Isabel [Arthur] Altenburg, being the second in a family of eleven children. Mr. Altenburg enlisted in June 186?. He was a private in Company G, Seventh regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served [illegible] years. He was twice wounded, once the battle of Gettysburg and once in the battle of the Wilderness. Shortly after the Civil war, after his return home, he was married to Miss Phoebe Noyes. They resided for a time at Plover village and he was employed as a member of a surveying crew then engaged in surveying for the Wisconsin Central Railroad. They later removed to the town of Buena Vista where much of his life was spent. Mr. and Mrs. Altenburg located in the town of Plover near the Robert Altenburg home, about 10 years ago and resided in a home of their own until her death. He is survived by four brothers and one sister, George Altenburg and Mrs. Isabel Stoddard of Stevens Point, Scott Altenburg of Kibbie, Michigan, and Worth and Roscoe Altenburg of Plover. He also leaves three sons: Frank and Robert of Plover and Carl who lives in Idaho. The first two mentioned were at his bedside when the end came.
