Obituary

The death of Mrs. Lester E. Gibson of Elk Creek township last Sunday morning at Grand Island removes another of the pioneer women who have contributed to the development of this great county of Custer. A school teacher, a home maker and a good neighbor, she won many warm friends in the southeastern part of the county, as well as elsewhere.
Ella Ruth, daughter of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Handy Sater, was born in Villisca, Iowa, July 11, 1866, and departed this life at St. Francis hospital at Grand Island, September 17, having lived 67 years and 2 months and 6 days. With her people she came to Nebraska about 1882 or '83, and located in Custer county in the valley of the South Loup river, about twelve miles northwest of Miller, in Elk Creek township in Custer county. She grew to young womanhood and attended school in the Kearney Normal preparing herself for the teaching profession. She taught in Phelps county for a time, and later in the Flat Bottom district in the home neighborhood.
She was married to Lester E. Gibson at Eudell January 29, 1888, and they immediately set up their home on a farm in that neighborhood. Mr. Gibson was appointeds postmaster, and the office was setup in his home and named Eudell, his middle name. To this union four children were born: Herbert Alfonso Gibson, Mrs. Leola Bell Ogden, both of Broken Bow, Lous D., Mason City, and Addie Ruth, who died in infancy.
Mrs. Gibson accepted and confessed Christ while a girl, living in Iowa, and she has been true to that early faith throughout her life, and died in full assurance of the resurrection when all who are in the graves shall hear His voice and come forth to meet the Lord. She united with the Ansley Christian church years ago, retaining her membership in that organization to the end.
Besides her husband and the three children there is living also one brother, Phillip E. Sater of Model, Colorado.
She was always greatly interested in children and youth, and in her church work sought and found opportunity to use her talents in their behalf.
The illness that finally resulted in her death began actively some three months ago, and within the last three weeks it assumed a critical phase and she steadily declined. She went to a hospital some ten days ago in the hope that her trouble might be more certainly and definitely determined and relief obtained. Nothing could be done and she answered the last call in the early hours of Sunday morning, going out peacefully and without suffering. A friendly, kindly, cheerful woman has gone to the long rest, prepared and ready.
Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Broken Bow, Tuesday, September 18, conducted by W. A. Baldwin, pastor of the church, in the presence of a large number of the old-time friends and neighbors, together with those of later acquaintance from Ansley and Broken Bow. Two vocal solos were given by Mr. R. S. Kuns and Miss Ethel Booknau, Mrs. D. R. Garton, accompanist. Interment was had in the Ansley Cemetery, the body being borne to its rest by Joseph Brooks, Orville (Orvis?) Meston, Orrie Coffman, Clyde Arnold, Jasper Robinson and Adrian Meston. (Probably from the Custer County Chief, Broken Bow, Custer Co., Nebraska)
