Judge Cas Moss, 87, retired since 1954, died at a Winnfield hospital Tuesday, October 10, 1961, after a lengthy illness. He had served as Judge of the Eighth District for 24 years before his retirement.
Funeral services were conducted at the Laurel Heights Baptist Church, Winnfield at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the pastor, the Rev. C.C. Martin, and a former pastor, the Rev. H.J. Mott officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield
cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were: Elton Mixon, Dennis Curry, Jack Jones, Murphy Worsham, Clyde Jones, Harvey Rhymes and Ellis Teddlie of Winnfield; and R. J. Moss, Shreveport.
Honorary pallbearers were bar and court officials of Winn and Grant parishes, and deacons of the Laurel Heights Baptist Church.
Born in Caldwell parish, Judge Moss came to Winn parish as a young man. He was an outstanding church layman throughout his life, serving with the First Baptist Church of Winnfield for many years, and in his later life, promoted the building of the Laurel Heights Church and its activities. He was on the board of deacons of this church at the time of this death.
Following his graduation from Tulane University Law School, Judge Moss started his law practice in Winnfield in 1901.
During his lifetime, he was superintendent of Winn Parish Schools, president of the Louisiana Baptist Brotherhood, president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention two terms, vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention and on the board of trustees of the Baptist Orphanage, Monroe and the Baptist Hospital, Alexandria, in addition to numerous other positions and activities.
He was first elected as judge of the Eighth Judicial District in 1912 and served terms at intervals until his retirement in 1954 on his 80th birthday.
His wife, the former Ophelia Wallace, preceded him in death September, 1960.
He leaves one son, Casimir D. Moss, one daughter, Mrs. Ophelia Storey, both of Winnfield; a brother, Herbert Moss, Shreveport; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Hanks, Tallulah; three grandchildren, Cas B. Moss, Winnfield, Mrs. Eddie Russell, Natchitoches, and Stuart Storey, Waco, Texas; and four great grandchildren.
