Thomas Clarke Saunders was the son of Clarke Saunders and Elizabeth Cooper. He joined the Union Army in 1861 and was captured at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. He became a lawyer after the war, married Harriet Amelia Colegrove, and lived with her and his two surviving children in Westfield, PA before moving to Devils Lake, Dakota Territory in 1882. Thomas was one of the first settlers of this area, and in 1883 was appointed as one of the first three commissioners for the area. Thomas and Harriet separated soon after, and Thomas departed Devils Lake about 1905, working his way to California. He died in Romero Canyon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1909. He is buried in a numbered military grave.
