Louise Atkinson, 75, of Britton, SD, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, Friday, May 14, 2010, under the care of Britton Hospice at Avera-Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton after an intense struggle with bone cancer since early March.

Louise Kimball was born September 25, 1934, at home in Knox County, near Edina, Missouri, to Francis and Ruth (Peterson) Kimball.
The family returned to the Claremont, SD area when Louise was 2 years old. Louise graduated salutatorian of the Class of 1952 from Claremont High School.

On October 1, 1953, Louise married the love of her life, Gerald Atkinson. She loved babies and always wanted a big family. Together Gerald and Louise raised their six children on the family farm southeast of Britton.
Gerald and Louise retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Britton. The most difficult thing she and Gerald ever faced was the loss of their son, David, in 1989.

Louise loved to play Scrabble, Yahtzee and poker, to knit and to cook for her family, and flowers. She watched "Days of Our Lives" since its inception on television. She was a member of the Britton United Methodist Church.
She was also a long time member of the Merry Wives extension club. One of her favorite activities was spending Wednesday evenings with friends and family at the VFW for happy hour and burger night.
Louise did not enjoy chasing cows, driving the grain truck or being the disciplinarian.

Louise is survived by her five daughters: Cheryl Loebs (Darrell Eikamp), Britton, Lori (Steve) McCormick, Spokane, WA, Joni Bush (Richard "Scotty" Scott), Rapid City, Janelle (Kirk) Swanson, Britton, and Lana Wietgrefe (Brian Henley), Britton; thirteen grandchildren: Meghan (Jeff) Gronau, Shauna Swanson, Kevin McCormick, Vanessa Bush, Alyson McCormick, Alex Swanson, Michael Swanson, Amy Wietgrefe, Ross Loebs, Josh Loebs, Andrew Wietgrefe, Erica Wietgrefe, and Eli Wietgrefe; and three great grandchildren: Hunter, Hayden and Isaac Gronau.

Also surviving are 2 sisters, Beverly Smith, Chesterfield, VA, and Glenda (Perry) Hays, Hopewell, VA, a brother, Jack (Judie) Kimball, Summerset, SD; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bonnie (Clayton) Gerken, Harold (Sharon) Atkinson, Ronnie Roehr, Jane (Dennis) Bush, and Kathleen (George) Miles; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to David, Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald in 1994, her parents, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 18th, at the Price Funeral Chapel, Britton. Visitation will be followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Deb Mack, will be held at the Britton United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 19th, with burial following at the Britton Cemetery.
