Neal was the husband of Irene Meares, the son of Furnie Franklin Ammons and Dorthea Causee Ammons. He was the father of Ann, Fran, and Sue Ammons.

Private First-Class, U.S. Army, entered the service on September 3, 1943, and served at Camps, Van Dorn, Mississippi, Patrick Henry, Virginia, Kilmer, N.J.; Served in England, France, Belgium, and Holland. He was wounded in action while in Germany on February 23, 1945, and awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

He attended Cerro Gordo, High School. Baptist.
