John was a very successful owner of a pool hall & cafe with several employees, but Fannie was very religious and would not marry him until he sold the business. From then on, he was a farmer, then owned and operated gas stations.
John and his sister Lula were both very young (7 and 8) when their mother died in 1889 (father was already dead). They had to go live with their older sister Sarah J Fox and her husband Lum?, where they were treated unkindly. Sarah would make John chop wood for hours and pay him a nickel, but then Lum would come in at night and make him give back the nickel. The kids finally ran away and hid in the woods, where they were found and taken in by 2 neighboring families, both black. One of the black families sent a letter to Rockport MO to tell Charles Martin what had happened to his niece and nephew. William Henry "Dee" (my great-grandfather) Fox and Charles Martin Fox went to to Morristown TN to get the kids and brought John to Rockport. Lula apparently did not come to MO because she later married and died in TN.
Dee and Charles were working for the Rudasil family in Rockport, and Mrs. Rudasil gave little John the jobs of collecting eggs and dusting. She would leave coins on the window sill to test his honesty. (I feel certain that he passed those tests with flying colors!) He did not get to go to school.
Mr Rudasil was insane and was kept locked in an upstairs room. When Mrs. Rudasil decided to buy more land, she would have Mr. Rudasil brought out of the room to go with her.
John's best friend was a boy last-named Martin. ? Martin moved to Litchfield NE, and at some point, John rode a horse to Litchfield to visit his friend and decided to stay. There he met and married Fannie Halbiesen in Feb 1906.
