Biography by Bessie Boomgaarn-

I was born in a log house 25 miles east of Springfield, Mo. on June 6 at 5 1/2 pounds. My fathers name was George (Brim?) and my mothers name was Maria. We lived a mile west of a small town.

I had one sister and two brothers older than me and two brothers and one sister younger than I.

We lived in the same house until I was eight years old, then we moved about one mile to another farm, where we lived a year and the coming March, 1903 we to move about 5 miles away. My father passed away before we moved away March 3, 1903. My younger brother was 2 years old. I was 10, two between and three older ones.

Mother moved to the farm my father had rented before he died. My second brother with some help from the oldest one farmed the place. The older brother was in college. Mother didn't want him to stop college.

We lived there the year out. Then mother sold the live stock and we went to town. I and the 3 younger children started to the city to help with the family. We bought a home in town and lived there until we were all through school and we were all married there except the two youngest ones. Mother left there in 1913 with Oren, Katie and Earl. She went to Kansas City, Kans. to be close to her sister.

I married Herman in 1911 and came to the farm in Nebraska where I am still living. Herman and I had 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys. They are all married except the oldest boy. He is farming with his father and taking care of the property as Herman is 77 plus 8 months old.

Sometimes Herman doesn't feel to well for a week or ten days and doesn't do much. Other times he helps Raymond with the farm work and the care of live stock.

Herman and I celebrated our golden wedding anniversary Nov. 21, 1961. I am 70 years old my last birthday. I feel like about 90. We have 9 grandchildren. Four boys and 5 girls which we don't know. We seldom ever see them, once a year for a few days. They grow so fast we hardly recognize them from year to year. We haven't seen our two older grandchildren since they were 15 years old. Now Dorothy is around 25 and Sammies around 28, but they must live their lives the way they want. They were such sweet children when I knew them. Our second daughter comes to visit us sometimes twice a year and is so sweet I can hardly stand to see her leave us, but she has her home and work to do so she leaves. Our oldest daughter just comes once a year and sometimes she misses a year and just stays a few days. The youngest son when he was first married he came for Sunday dinner every week. He did that for about 2 years. Then he and his wife were separated and divorced.

He married again in about 6 months to his present wife and they came pretty often but she didn't care for any of Virgil's folks. He drifted farther away. After about 7 or 8 years she coaxed him to leave the farm. We fought for him and his first wife. They moved to the city and got a good job. Then came for a few hours every 3 or 4 months to see us. Now she has him so he doesn't want to see us at all. We don't even know where he is.

He came home in June and said they were going to Missouri when she left she told us we would never get to see the children again or hear from them. They have never wrote and let us k now where or how they were. I guess that is the way he wants to live. We are picking corn today, the 18th of Oct. 1963. The corn turned out pretty good in spite of the drought.
