Susan was the child of Seraphin and Catharine Runser. She died on the sailing ship "Champion" when her family was moving to America from the town of Basel in the Province of Alsace which was at that time a part of France.

"Grandmother Runser emigrated to America in 1832 with her husband and six children, losing one bright little girl whilst crossing the waters. This loss the mother mourned greatly and even in her last years she would often speak of little Susan."
