Mary Jo Floyd Hughes, age 83, passed away at 10:45A.M., Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the family ranch in Belk, Texas after a brief illness.

She was born April 3, 1925, in the Shady Grove Community of Lamar County, Texas to Earl Kelley and Lillian Opal Whitten Floyd. She grew up in a happy family of 10 children on a farm near Pattonville. She graduated from Deport High School in 1942.

Business Administration was her favorite subject and passion. Due to the plentiful supply of jobs offered to high school graduates during World War II, she entered the workforce as a bookkeeper and typist at the First National Bank in Paris. She attended night classes at the Intensive Secretarial School in Paris, where she received training in typing and shorthand and other subjects related to business administration.

After her training she accepted a position as secretary to the manager of Lamar Cotton Oil Company from 1943 to 1946. In June of 1946, she became employed by Texas Power and Light Company in Paris as receptionist and secretary to the district manager. She kept this position until the year 1953.

During the next eleven years she devoted herself to her family and home and the family ranch. She assumed this position as she did with every part of life with passion, gusto, and determination. She was the beginning of the Super-Mom Era: family, faith and business.

After this time period, Mrs. Hughes enjoyed a long career of 40 years as office manager at Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home. She loved working with Mr. Marvin Gibbs in the funeral home business and in civic endeavors. She always enjoyed people and her mission was helping families through the administrative process during their time of grief.

Mary Jo was passionate about women and their place in the business world. She and her associates were very active in the early 1970?s in the legislative process of Equal Rights for Women in the Workplace. She believed that women deserved to have an active and equal role in business. Through this effort she contributed to helping, mentoring, and encouraging young women to take their place as leaders in the business world.

She married Joel B. Hughes in Paris, Texas on December 8, 1946 and lived in Belk where they owned and operated the Hughes Ranch. They were married for 63 years.

Over her life and career she was a leader in numerous community and civic organizations. She was a member for 63 years and the past president of the Paris Business and Professional Women?s Club and a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church. She was Business Women of the Year in 1981.

She especially enjoyed entertaining in her home. Also, she loved the social parties, teas, and showers and especially their Supper Club friends.

Memorials may be made in her honor to the Business and Professional Women?s Scholarship at Paris Junior College or the Paris Public Library
