After a full life and fulfilling God's purpose, Helen Jenkins Aiken, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, March 14, 2007.
Helen Jenkins Aiken was bom February 14, 1900 in rural Charleston County, South Carolina. She was the wife of the late William R. Aiken. The daughter of the late Rev. Scippio Jenkins, then moderator of the East Coast Baptist Church Association, pastor and builder of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Adams Run, South Carolina; and the late Serena Moultrie Jenkins, graduate of the prestigious Presbyterian Christian Socialites of New England.
Helen was the 4th daughter and the 7'h child of 14 siblings. Affectionately known as "mama"- "mama Aiken", she was the mother of three adopted children, James R. Aiken of Chicago, Anna Aiken Wright (Bobby) of Maryland, Allen R. Aiken of Charleston as well as a host of foster children, including the late, Bernard Brown, the late Delores Clark, the late Paulette Funn, Nadine Stafford of Chicago, Joesph Green of Maryland, Elizabeth Gladden, Micheal Hamilton, Ann Marie Brown, Jerome Seabrook all presently residing in Charleston, and many others. She also leaves to mourn her loss, a host of grandchildren, great-¬grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
She earned a certificate in mid-wifery and child development from Voorhees College in South Carolina. She used her skills and knowledge throughout the community. Her home was a licensed foster home in Charleston county for more than twenty-five years. Many came through her home that were nurtured with her love, care, and dedication to children and families in need.
For her strength, support and selflessness, "Mama" will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Her fortitude and spiritual stamina was exemplified by her strong commitment to God and through tireless service to people of all ages. "Mama Aiken" attended Morris St. Baptist Church faithfully until she was 100 years old. Following that time, her Deacon continued her monthly communion service with her at home.
Her visit to Maryland in November, 2003, turned into a long stay after she encountered a minor health set-back that would not allow her to travel back to her home in Charleston. During her stay in Maryland, she was known as "the strong old lady with a song and scripture every day".
