During his term of service, Bereman was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on Jan. 1, 1864, and then to 1st Sergeant on Jan. 16, 1865.
He mustered out of the service with his company on Aug. 8, 1865, in Atlanta.
His brother, William A. Bereman, also served in the 4th Iowa Cavalry as a 2nd LT. Another brother, Jonathan, enlisted in the 25th Iowa Infantry, but came home in 1863 and died of disease contracted in the service. Alvah Bereman was appointed Captain of the 18th U.S. Infantry, and later became Colonel of the 45th Iowa Infantry. T.A. Bereman was a Major in the 1st Iowa Cavalry. T.H. Bereman was a Private in the 1st Iowa Cavalry.
Not to be outdone, the father of these six brave sons also joined up as a member of the 37th Iowa Infantry, better known as the "Graybeards." He became sick during the war, and died in his son, William's, tent.
The boys' mother served as a Union nurse during the war, and two sons-in-law also joined the Union army.
