Mrs. Cowdery was born May 14, 1931, in Atkins, Ark., to George and Mary Ellen Sweeden. In 1937, the family moved to California. She met Jay Cowdery, and they were married in 1950. In 1952, they came to Alaska. Active in many community projects, she worked on the visitors log cabin at Fourth Avenue and F Street with a women's subgroup of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Jaycees. She adored gardening, painting and crafts, her family said. Mrs. Cowdery was an active member of Women of the Moose and served as a recorder and in other official positions. She was a member of the Academy of Friendship, Parent-Teacher Association, Girl Scouts and Anchorage Women's Bowling Association. She was an avid bowler and director of the 600 Club. Her family said: "She loved to spend as much time as possible with her family at their cabin on the Kenai. But her greatest love was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. No matter what, she always gave her all to her family and friends and always stood proudly behind them. Her compassion and love was the cornerstone of her family. She was a good person who loved God and will be missed by all."
Mrs. Cowdery is survived by her husband, Jay, her sons, David, Michael, Sam, and daughter, Cheryl Curtis, of Anchorage; two sisters, Polly Kelch of California and Karen Pope of Anchorage; three brothers, Chuck Sweeden of California and Pat and Allen Sweeden of Anchorage; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary. Memorial donations may be sent to the Anchorage Moose Lodge, 4211 Arctic Blvd., Anchorage 99503.
