He was born March 19, 1917, in Biwabik to Louis and Mary (Sustar) Delak.
He was a 1937 graduate of Horace Mann High School in Biwabik. He was a proud member of the 1881st Army Aviation Engineers Battalion, the only World War II noncombat unit to be awarded the Distinguished Service Citation, serving in the Pacific from Australia to the Philippines. On April 18, 1942, he married Katie Biondich in Gilbert. He retired from Erie Mining Co, as a shovel operator with 38 years of service. He was a member of the Gilbert Veterans of Foreign War post and St Joseph's Catholic Church of Gilbert.
He is survived by his daughter, Carol Delak, of Minneapolis; son, Don (Jerry) Delak, of Pine City, MN; granddaughters, Heidi and Erica Delak; brothers, Ed Delak of Aurora and Bob Delak of Side Lake; sister, Mayme Mohar, of Biwabik; special friends, Joe Purkat and John DeLuca; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katie, in 1994; sister, Dorothy Sherek, in 1994.
