Dennis & Catherine Marudas lost three of their small children on the same day. Kate and Dennis went out to milk the cows. Later Kate smelled smoke and they ran out of the barn and found the house on fire. Dennis was quite badly burned trying to save the children and it damaged his eye sight.
They owned a café in Sandstone called The One Minute Lunchroom. Dennis was driving up to close it for the evening when he rear-ended a snow plow. His family always blamed his damaged vision on the accident. Kate was left with four small children to raise and a farm to run. She had a very hard life. Not many of us could imagine going through what she did.
