James Layfield was injured in September 1864 in the Third Battle of Winchester, Virginia. He may have been allowed to come home on furlough for awhile to heal, for their youngest son was born in 1865.

James was back with his unit fighting in the Battle of Sailer's Creek (Saylor's Creek) Virginia, the final battle of the Civil War. Mrs. Hillman's farm adjoined the land at Sailor's Creek where the battle ensued. Her home became the field hospital April 6, 1865. Surgeons amputated arms and legs, operating when they could, and comforted screaming, dying men all night. James Layfield, age 32, died 5days later, April 11, 1865. The Union soldiers were temporarily buried on Mrs. Hillman's farm. Records of the dead soldiers names, ranks, companies and regiments were carefully scribed for future reference to move the dead and inter them elsewhere.

Elizabeth was a strong, devout Christian woman. She struggled to provide for their six sons. They helped her, working hard with the farm through they years. She instilled values and character in her sons as they grew to become adults. Elizabeth never remarried. She rests in Layfield Cemetery.
