John Milton Claypool was the son of George Washington Claypool and Malinda (Collins) Claypool. During the War Between the States, he was a Lieutenant in Company E, 47th Regiment Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A., and was wounded three times. After the war, he was a minister of the gospel. He was elected Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans (U.C.V.), for which he received the rank of General, in 1937-38, and was also elected to the same position in 1941-42. He was the last Confederate veteran to die in St. Louis.
