Daniel Webster Flory was born on Jan 26, 1844 and raised in Smithburg, MD, the 9th of 15 children of John Conrad and Rebecca Flora. He had siblings Ann, Alexander, Berlin, Barbara, Cinderella, Mary Jane, John, Selena, Susan, Joseph, Samuel, Clara & Martha. Susan & Selena were twins.
Daniel's grandfather Conrad was born in Rapho Twp, PA. Sometime before 1802 the family moved to Smithburg, MD where his father John was born.
He enlisted in the Union Army on Aug. 21, 1862 in Hagerstown, MD at age 18 and was a private in Company H, 6th Regiment of the Maryland Volunteer Infantry and then became a corporal.
He was 25 when he married Jane Hopkins on Sept. 26, 1869. They were married in Greenwich by Rev. Henry Reynolds and had their first three children while living there. The family sold their house in Greenwich Township for $700 on July 4, 1877 and then moved to Fairview, KS (along with his brothers Joseph and John and his wife Ella). The lived in a sod house on the prairie where Geneva was born in 1879 & twin boys about 1881 who only lived 21 days.
After the death of his brother Joseph, the family moved back to Greenwich where Alice and Berlin were born.
They had been married 22 years when Daniel died Nov. 1891 at age 47 from asthma & lung trouble contracted during the Civil War. Jane died 12 years later on July 3, 1903 at age 52.
Both are buried in Nineveh Cemetery in Greenwich Twp. His death certificate lists him as a mason in 1891.
