FUSTER ALLEN COOK (1920-1980)

Fuster Allen Cook is the son of Jesse Newton Cook a farmer and son of a farmer and Cynthia Elizabeth Macon, the daughter of a Southern Baptist Minister. He was born 16 Nov 1920, in Spring Valley, Arkansas. His name is pronounced Fooster. There is a family story that there was a considerable amount of disagreement in the family about the best and most appropriate name for the newborn soon to be named Fuster. Two of Fuster's kin [his dad's uncles] even got into a fistfight over it [one wonders why the wishes of mom and dad were not the deciding factor, maybe naming a child in those days had to respect what the grandparents said, or not]. So, what to do? Elizabeth Miles Cook, Fuster's grandmother said, "I know, I have decided... his name will be Fuster". The name stuck. Years later, his mother tried to get him to legally change his name [apparently, she asked him to do this multiple times], but to no avail. Fuster said he would respond whenever he was called regardless of the name [As remembered by Lena Cook Kregness].

Fuster's name is unusual. Unusual names do cause a response from people when they are introduced to anyone with an unusual name. I thought it important to remember how Fuster acquired his unusual name and the fact that his mother did want him to change it. Because, she was present when people hearing her son's name for the first time, did respond with less than appropriate respect—she took immediate umbrage to their rude comments. Lena Cook Kregness continues: her Grandmother Elizabeth, was called "Ma" by everyone, and had a quick wit & a funny sense of humor. When Jesse's two uncles got into a fight over a name, she thought it was funny. She just said: Ohhh, I'm just gonna name him Fuster! She said it as a way of calming things down & never meant for it to "stick"... it did.

Fuster was about 5'8" tall, had a slim build, dark hair, and didn't talk a lot; quiet. Fuster was born to farming but a review of Census data indicates that he worked a range of jobs mostly as a laborer during his early working years. Fuster was 10 years old when his father died but he acquired a substitute Dad, his brother Delmer. Fuster only completed the 5th grade. Fuster made the move from Arkansas to California with Delmer in about 1939. Fuster was drafted into the Army during the later days of WW II, which provided some VA benefits that he used later in life. Fuster married the former Effie Evelyn Harris of Conroe, Texas; she was born 09 Nov 1915. Effie is the daughter of John Wesley Harris, (1861-1928) and Lydia Jane Tucker, (1873-1941) all of Montgomery County, Texas. I was told that when Fuster met Effie she was working in her family's restaurant. Fuster named his 1st son Fuster Alexander, he was born 15 Oct 1947 in Indio, CA.; everyone in the family called him F.A. Fuster and Effie's second child was born 08 Feb 1949 in Indio and was named Johnny Newton. I actually remember Johnny, and being very young never fully grasped at the time what I was being told, that sadly little Johnny wouldn't be with us anymore. Delmer, Fuster's brother, went out for a walk one day and took F.A. and little Johnny with him. Delmer walked along a small irrigation canal not far from the Cook home when the unthinkable happened. As small boys tend to do, they ran out ahead of Delmer to see what there was to see; Delmer did not regard it as dangerous or it didn't occur to him to worry about it. When Delmer caught up to the boy's he discovered Johnny face down in the water; Delmer was unable to revive Johnny. Little Johnny had drowned in the little irrigation canal at the back of the Cook property in Coachella, CA, a horrible accident; 18 May 1952. He passed away just a few months after his 3rd birthday; he was a cute kid. Johnny was interred in the Coachella Valley Cemetery, Coachella, CA; 21 May 1952, in Lot 92, Block 4, Unit 3. He is in great company; his Gramma Cynthia, his Uncle Delmer and Aunt Geneva, lie not far from him.

Fuster was living in Coachella, CA when he found his calling in the trades; he began his electrical apprenticeship in Indio, CA; later he established a home there. He worked all types of electrical jobs, residential, commercial and agricultural; he became a very fine master electrician. Lena, his sister, tells us that Fuster fell off a ladder at work and suffered a head injury. This injury affected him the rest of his life, his fine motor control was impaired.

Unfortunately, Fuster's health began to decline and consequently he and Effie made the decision to move to Texas to be closer to F.A. Fuster succumbed to a brain hemorrhage 25 Sep 1980 in Edinburg, TX, he was 59 years old. Effie continued to live in the Hidalgo area and began to have back issues that affected her legs. She eventually lost her ability to walk and was in need of a wheelchair. Effie passed away 13 Oct 1994; she was 79 years old. Effie was interred next to Fuster in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Fuster was 59 years old.
